Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Gastroenterologist to join the Gastroenterology Unit at Townsville University Hospital. This is an outstanding opportunity to deliver high-quality, consultant-led care across inpatient, outpatient, and outreach settings while contributing to a strong culture of teaching, innovation, and clinical excellence.
The opportunity
You will contribute to a comprehensive and well-established Gastroenterology service within a robust teaching and training environment. This role offers a broad and rewarding scope of practice, combining tertiary-level care with meaningful regional impact.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provision of consultant-led inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services
- Participation in a modern endoscopy service and emergency care
- Contribution to after-hours services, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays
- Delivery of outreach services to regional and rural communities, both in person and via telehealth
- Clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff within a strong Basic Physician Training (BPT) program
- Active involvement in medical student education, teaching and mentoring
About You
You are an experienced and collaborative Gastroenterologist committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. You bring strong clinical capability, leadership skills, and a passion for teaching and continuous improvement.
You will have:
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) Specialist registration with AHPRA (or eligibility)
- Demonstrated expertise in Gastroenterology, including endoscopic practice
- A strong commitment to education, supervision and mentoring
- A collaborative, professional approach
Subspecialty interests
A subspecialty interest in gastrointestinal motility and manometry is highly desirable. Other subspecialty interests, including interventional endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, or hepatology, will be supported and developed in alignment with service needs and future capability growth.

Remuneration and benefits
A comprehensive and competitive package includes:
- Remuneration in accordance with the Queensland Health Medical Officers’ Award
- Attraction and retention incentive allowance (50% of base salary)
- Regional and rural attraction allowance (5% of base salary)

- Employer contributions to superannuation (12.75%)
- 17.5% leave loading
- Professional development allowance + 3.6 weeks p.a. leave
