Position DescriptionThe Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) seeks an academic leader to serve as Director of the Health Policy Research Center (HPRC) and the Inaugural John D. Goodson Chair in Health Policy Research. The occupant of this role will be a leading health policy researcher who will build on the HPRC’s accomplishments and reputation of excellence at MGH, BWH, Harvard, and beyond; be responsible for leading a center that will have major impact at local, regional, and national levels; and promote team science and research training in collaboration with other Research and Specialty Centers and Divisions across MGH and BWH. The John D. Goodson Chair in Health Policy Research will honor the legacy of Dr. Goodson, serve as the next Director of the HPRC and will be appointed as a faculty member of Harvard Medical School (HMS).
An ideal candidate for this position will include an interest in research related to innovative policies and models of care delivery contributing to a balanced, accessible, cost-effective, equitable, and sustainable system of health care, including a specific interest in primary care.
Reporting to the Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine, this position is responsible for the overall academic goals and vision of the HPRC. The center director will:
- Foster an intellectually rich, collaborative community among faculty members, post-docs, staff, and students to advance the department’s research and educational missions;
- Create and nurture open lines of communication, collaboration, and academic opportunities with researchers across the Department of Medicine at MGH, BWH, and Harvard University’s many schools and faculties (especially the Department of Health Policy at Harvard Medical School and the TH Chan School of Public Health) as well as health policy scholars at the Harvard-affiliated hospitals who work in synergistic areas of research;
- Work with faculty across MGH, BWH, and Harvard University to support doctoral and post-doctoral trainees in health policy;
- Advocate on behalf of the HPRC to ensure that it maintains excellence and currency in research, faculty development and education to sustain the department’s reputation as a leading academic center.
The HPRC Director has direct oversight for center faculty and senior administrative employees and is responsible for the administrative and financial management of the HPRC.
Basic Qualifications
A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degrees) with scholarly expertise in relevant areas of health policy, economics, medical sociology, or health services research
Additional Qualifications
- A record of academic accomplishment compatible with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at Harvard Medical School;
- Demonstrated capacity for program development and leadership in research and teaching;
- Experience developing and leading large research teams and a successful track record as principal investigator of federal grants or contracts;
- Experience working in higher education, academic medicine, or health care;
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative and leadership skills;
- Focus on health care policy, domestically or internationally.
