Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and the Department of Pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine seeks a Ph.D. level director, or an MD or MD/PhD hematopathologist with experience in malignant and benign hematology flow cytometry. The successful candidate will be appointed to the position of Director of Hematology Flow Cytometry focusing primarily on flow cytometric diagnosis and monitoring of malignant hematological disorders, and benign hematology (e.g. platelet flow cytometry). In addition, there will be an opportunity to provide sign-out coverage for the Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory (DIL), in conjunction with the Laboratory Director of that section. The successful candidate will be expected to bring innovation to the hematological malignancies and benign hematology disciplines through research and development of new clinical tests, refinement of existing clinical tests, quality assurance, and regulatory oversight of clinical testing. Additionally, there are opportunities for active involvement in Children’s Oncology Group (COG)-related research.

The Laboratory Director of the Hematology Flow Cytometry section will provide interpretations and sign-out coverage for malignant/benign hematology flow cytometry testing, in conjunction with other faculty in the section. Sign-out coverage by rotation for the Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory will also be expected. The malignant hematology flow cytometry domain includes interpretation and sign-out of minimal residual disease (MRD) flow cytometry for B-ALL, besides diagnostic testing for other hematological diseases, including malignancies.

The DPLM at Nationwide Children’s Hospital includes approximately 30 pathologists and doctoral scientist faculty working with experienced technical staff in eight laboratories.  Building upon an already established and well-recognized pediatric pathology program, the candidate has the opportunity to grow the department’s mission by providing excellent clinical care, education and/or research. Faculty are given opportunities to obtain specific training externally for short periods of time in particular focus areas, when appropriate.

The selected individual will be expected to actively contribute to the department’s educational mission by teaching and developing curricula, as appropriate, for residents, graduate students, pathology fellows, and technologists. Additionally, contributions via internal and external consultative services through the Outreach Program is strongly encouraged.

The qualified candidate should possess either a PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree with appropriate post-doctoral and/or clinical fellowship training.  PhD applicants should be board-certified for ABMLI, board-certified or eligible for ABB-HCLD with certification in immunology and/or hematology. Individuals who are board-certified or board-eligible for ABCC and ABHI may be considered, if they have relevant post-doctoral experience in immunology and/or hematology with flow cytometry training.  MD or MD/PhD applicants should have board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, and board certification or eligibility in Hematopathology.

The DPLM performs 300+ bone marrow analyses, 250+ malignant hematology and lymphoid flow cytometry tests, and 1700+ hemoglobin electrophoresis tests per year. The clinical laboratories combined have a volume of >3 million tests per year, and the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) clinical laboratory processes 7,000+ specimens a year for molecular testing. The molecular test repertoire of the IGM continues to expand to support the DPLM as well as outside facilities across North America. IGM is also the central molecular testing laboratory for COG trials.

ACGME-accredited fellowship programs within the DPLM are in Pediatric Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Genetics & Genomics. The DPLM also hosts the only Pediatric Clinical Pathology Fellowship in the country.  Furthermore, as part of our commitment to faculty development and academic advancement, we have instituted a robust mentorship program for junior faculty with mentors at NCH and external institutions.
